The PAN is the Permanent Account Number which is a must to file the return and banking and financial operation. An Individual have to link his Aadhar Card with the PAN Number, and it is a mandatory requirement for the submission of income tax return. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) have extended the deadline of linking the PAN Card Number with Aadhar Number to 31st March 2018. Though the deadline date had been extended for the convenience of the PAN holder, it is always better to link the PAN Number with the Aadhar Number at the earliest. If in any case if ITR has been filed with linking the PAN number with Aadhar then to avoid rejection one has to link Aadhar Card with PAN Card before 31st March 2018.

How To Link Aadhar card With Pan card

To avoid any misconception one can definitely check by visiting the official income tax e-filing website www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in whether the PAN Number is linked with Aadhar Number. On checking a message appears on the screen stating ‘Your PAN is already linked to Aashar Number ‘XXXX-XXXX-XXXX.’ When PAN is not linked with the Aadhar, then a new screen will appear with a form in which the user has to provide one’s personal details like name, date of birth and gender as stated in PAN Card. Then after entering the captcha code submit the form with Aadhar.

 

Linking of Aadhar with PAN is mandatory

Though a taxpayer can submit the file without linking the department would not proceed to evaluate the return until the PAN is linked with the Aadhar Number. The linking as stated earlier can be easily done through the official website of the income tax department. Let us see the steps one should follow to link the two

  • Visit incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in and click on the Link Aadhar that appears in the left pane
  • Enter the PAN and Aadhar No. Then submit after entering the name exactly as stated on the Aadhar card without spelling mistake. After this, a verification process will be carried out by the UIDAI which is the official department handling this massive responsibility of linking all individual of the country to one Government database. After some time the linking will be confirmed by the concerned department.

In any case where the name of the two does not match the link would fail, and the taxpayer would be instructed to change the name of any of the two.

Now let us see how the linking of PAN with Aadhar is done through the official website of the income tax department after proper login.

  • Visit incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in
  • If one had already registered then enter by the login. In case the taxpayer has not registered earlier then one need to register at the e-filing portals of the income tax. Log in can be done by entering the Log-in ID and password
  • After log-in one can see a popup appearing prompting to link Aadhar Card with PAN Card. If for any reason one cannot locate the popup one can find on the top bar a blue tab stating ‘Profile Setting’ and then click on the ‘Link ’
  • The individual name, date of birth and gender would be automatically displayed as stated while registering on the portals of the e-filing. Now the individual has to tally the details provided by the tax department with the details of the Aadhar card. This is very important as any discrepancy would not allow the link of the vital numbers. In case of any mistake on either card, the individual should approach the concerned department for rectifications.
  • When the detail of the Aadhar Card matches with the PAN details submit after filling the captcha code at the required blank space. Then click on the button stating ‘Link ’
  • On successful linking of the two numbers, a popup message would be displayed stating that the Aadhar Card has been successfully linked to the PAN Card.

LINK Aadhar Card With Pan Card Using SMS / Mobile Text Message

For the convenience of the taxpayer the income tax department has created a system under which an individual can link Aadhar Card with PAN Card at ease by SMS through one’s mobile. One taxpayer can send an SMS to the service provider of Permanent Account Number. It can be either National Security Depository Limited (NSDL) or UTI Infrastructural Technology and Service Limited (UTILITY) or e-Governance Infrastructural Limited. An SMS of specific format can be sent to the either 567678 or 56161.

The Format of sending the SMS to the specified number is given below

UIDPAN (1 Space) <12 Digit Aadhar Number> {1 Space) <10-Digit PAN Number>

For example, if someone’s Aadhar number is 132412341234 and has the PAN number as ADAPA1111Q then his SMS should be as under

UIDPAN 132412341234 ADAPA1111Q

The above SMS, for example, have to send to 567678 or 56161. For this, the mobile service provider would only charge at their regular rate for SMS. NSDL or UTI will not charge for the service.

Manual Linking is also possible

With the Annexure-1 notification, CBDT has provided the taxpayers to link Aadhar Card with PAN Card manually. This is also very much helpful when the mismatch regarding personal details arises between the two numbers. One can visit any service center of one’s locality. ‘Annexure-I’ has to be properly filled and submitted with the required supporting documents as a reference. But this service is not free, and the individual is required to pay the prescribed charged levied for the service. The charge varied according to the document under which the correction has to be made. If any correction is required in the Aadhar Card, then the charge is Rs.25 only. On the other hand, if any discrepancy has to be solved in the PAN Card then the service provider would charge Rs.110. It can be noted that biometric authentication is mandatory if any major mismatch arises in the Aadhar Number or PAN Number.

To conclude it can be stated that if one had not already linked one’s Aadhar Card with the PAN Number then do it at the earliest to avoid any inconvenience.
